Summer Day Camp
Camp Carpenter
Manchester, NH

Day Camp - August 8-12, 2005

It is time to turn our attention to the excitement of summer now that school is wrapping up!!  What more can a scout ask for than a fun filled week participating in activities with other scouts his age?

Day camp is offered to all scouts entering grades 1* - 5 who are registered with the Boy Scouts of America.  Pack 114 will be participating Aug 8-12, 2005 @ Camp Carpenter.  Camp runs 9:00am-4:00pm, Mon-Fri.

*Tiger Cubs

Registered scouts entering first grade in 2005 may attend day camp with an adult partner.

A free tag-a-long program is offered for adult volunteers.  Tag-a-longs must be at least two years old and potty trained.  They will be kept busy and entertained by trained adults with a variety of activities.

Volunteer opportunities range from one day to a week long commitment.  Parents who elect to stay the week are required to participate in a one day training seminar at Camp Carpenter on June 4 or June 18.  The time will be announced soon.  Your child attends camp free if you volunteer for the week.  Volunteers need to fill out a volunteer registration form and a health form.  All forms may be uploaded from the district web site.

Once scouts are at camp, they will be kept within their respective rank.  This will enable the leaders to work on rank specific badges in between swimming, archery, BB shooting, crafts, and sports!  Does this sound like something your scout would enjoy?  If so,  please complete one registration form and one health form per scout.  This can be located on the district web site @ www.dwcbsa.org/camps/cscampingindex.htm  .  Click on day camp then select the required forms.

FAMILY CAMPING WEEKEND
Fri.-Sun., August 19-21, 2005

Family Camping Weekend takes place at the Branch Brook Campground in Campton, NH. Although the weekend officially starts Saturday morning @ 8:30 AM, most campers drive up Friday afternoon – August 19th, (anytime after 2:00 PM) to set up their campsites. This is a relaxing night with campfires, great food, great stories and s’mores.

On Saturday, 8:30 AM, Ski Fanatics will be picking all of us “river folk” up and driving us to the Launch spot – “Robins Nest”. Although it can be a bit confusing for all of us to get our canoes/kayaks into the water with all our packed lunches, water and family – we all do get off and start down the river.

This entails canoeing/kayaking lazily down the river. When we start to get hot – we find a nice place to jump in the cool river water. When we get hungry, we stop and find a place to eat our packed lunches. There are places to jump off trestles, rope swings, rocks etc. The trip ends in the afternoon not far from our campsites.

Those who are bringing their own canoes/kayaks will follow the bus in the morning and then one of your fellow Cub Scout families will drive you back to get your car. (it is only a few minutes away.)

Saturday afternoon we all just relax and rest. Later on in the evening we have our annual “parents vs. children” kickball game. This game is very much enjoyed by both parents and children. We also will be meeting at a designated campsite and we will enjoy some great appetizers and conversation.

The rest of the night is yours! The campground always has activities going on such as hayrides, ice-cream socials etc. This particular weekend is “Halloween”. Upon arrival check-in you will be asked if you would like to participate with giving out candy. If you do, then they will give you a sticker to put on your site sign so the children know which campsites are participating. Some children do dress up – but it is not necessary. They also have a beautiful pool where your children can go in and wash off the river water! It is very clean and cold. Sunday morning we get up, pack and go home.

If you are interested, please send your check immediately to Sue Fahey. The cost is 29.00/night. (If you sold over $850.00 worth of popcorn, you get to stay one night free!)

Once you have sent Sue your check – please let me know which campsite you would like. Please go to our BSA website, go to Pack News, scroll down to ‘Branch Brook’ and click on “More Info”. Please look for the site you want (sites 46- 65) Please know that sites 47, 48, 50 & 52 are for larger tents and/or campers.

Please let me know if you are renting from Ski Fanatics. I will get the release and order form to you as soon as I can. The reservations and payment is your responsibility. You need to pay for your canoe to Ski Fanatics no later than 7/1/05. Also, make sure you note what size life jackets and how many you will need. The cost is $35.00 for the Canoes, $35.00 for the 2 person kayaks and $25.00 for one-person kayaks.

Please feel free to call me anytime! 471-0027 or email me @ fconery27@comcast.net

Thank you,

Bren Conery

HIKE - BRIDAL VEIL FALLS
Franconia, NH

DIRECTIONS:
Take I-93 North. Take Route 18 North (just past the Old Man of the Mountain) into Franconia. In center of town, turn left over bridge onto Route 116 (at Mobil station) and follow 3.4 miles. Turn left onto Coppermine Road (see sign on right of Rte 116) and park in dirt parking area on left. (See pictures below.)

TIME ESTIMATE:
Figure roughly two hours driving time from Manchester area. Hiking time one way is about 90 minutes. Don’t forget to allow time before or after the hike to view the remains of the Old Man of the Mountain.

DESCRIPTION:
This is an easy, pleasant trail that leads to a beautiful waterfall and cascades, feeding into a pleasant, crystal clear pool. The trail is 2.5 miles long and gains 1106 ft. The trail is mostly wide, but can be a little rocky and wet in places. The trail roughly follows Coppermine Brook, and there are many places to stop along the brook for a picnic or photos. There is a footbridge and a covered hut near the end of the trail. There was still some ice and snow visible in places. Definitely one of the most pretty, tranquil and worthwhile places I have hiked to in the White Mountains.

WHAT TO BRING:
I recommend dressing in layers, as most of the trail is shaded and cool. Wear comfortable hiking boots or sneakers, preferably something with ankle support. Bring water and a snack or a picnic lunch, as we will arrive at the Falls around noon. A backpack or fanny pack, change of socks, towel, camera and swimming trunks are recommended. Insect repellent and sunscreen are optional.

DETAILS:
We will meet at the parking area and start the hike at 10am. Parking space is limited so be prepared to arrive beforehand and park close together. The rain date for this event is Saturday, June 28th, same time. I will keep a record of who attends for summer activity recognition. I will also have a first aid kit and communications set up at the front and rear of our party. There are plenty of scenic places to stop for breaks. The covered hut could shelter about 15-20 kids and adults in a pinch. My cell phone number is 345-6294 should you get lost on the way and my e-mail is d.r.fortin@comcast.net if anyone has questions before hand.
